Café Majestic is a “must-see” café in the heart of the old city of Porto. Sitting on Rua Santa Catarina, around the corner from the Coliseu, the café was born under the name “Elite” in 1921, having been designed in the Porto café tradition that goes back to the 1850s.
Designed by renowned architect Joao Queirós, the opening of the café attracted a large crowd but the name did not catch on. A year later, the name was changed to Café Majestic.
Life has not always been majestic for the café, however. Between 1964 and 1980 Café Majestic fell into disrepair and only new management revived its reputation.
Now an architectural jewel in Porto, the café attracts a lot of tourists who come to drink a “meia de leite” and try a “tosta mista” in the decorous surroundings.
Café Majestic has a fine menu that includes bacalhau and duck. The other great thing about Café Majestic is that it is open every day from 9.30am to midnight.
The café is one of 20 famous cafés to visit in Europe, according to the RatesToGo blog.
