Cable car in Vila Nova de Gaia

Cable car in Vila Nova de Gaia overlooking PortoWhen you are in Porto, a great way to see the Port wine area in Vila Nova de Gaia is to take the cable car from the top of the town down to Cais de Gaia, on the river bank.

The Teleférico de Gaia was built between March 2009 and April 2011. The upper station puts you close to the Metro station, where you can either take a tram across the river to the historic sites of Porto city centre, or you can walk across the bridge for some breathtaking photo opportunities.

The cable car costs €5 per adult for a one-way trip, or you can buy a family ticket for €20. See the official Teleférico de Gaia website for more information and a great photo gallery.

Hi Steve – I am visiting this amazing city at the beginning of December & would love to use the cable car. I would ask your advice as in our party there are 2 elderly ladies who are not good with climbing hills or walking too far. We are staying in the Ribeira area and would take the Metro to Jardim do Morro. If we use the Cable Car it will take us to the Cais de Gaia which seems quite a walk back to the Port wine area where we can sample the port/wine, is this correct?. The other option is to walk from the Metro station but I have no idea how difficult this will be. I would be very grateful to receive your advice. Thank you

    • Hi Pat, if you take the cable car from the top to the bottom, the road is flat and you can walk a short distance to Ramos Pinto, Sandeman or Ferreira on street level. The Ferreira caves are worth a visit. I would recommend a visit to Taylor’s and to the Yeatman Hotel (both close to each other). Taylor’s has a nice restaurant but this is up a hill and you may want to grab a taxi for the short ride up to there.
