The annual medieval fair in Matosinhos (“Feira Medieval Matosinhos”), which takes place in the second week of September, is more than a weekend of historical dressing up. The event is linked to the centuries-old pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela – the famous Christian pilgrimage to the place where St James’s remains are said to be buried.
The monasteries in Portugal would have seen, for the past thousand-plus years, pilgrims making the journey we now know as Caminho do Santiago (or, in English, the way of St James). The Medieval Fair in 2011 is sited at the Monastery of Leça do Balio, which is just outside the city of Porto, near the A4 turn off for Maia.
Visitors can see tournaments, fighting, hear medieval music, watch dancing and enjoy plenty more historic-themed attractions.
