Southern Portugal in four days

If you want to get a picture of Portugal’s southern region in one visit, you should take a look at the four day tour offered by Portugal Tours. Departing every Saturday at 9am, this guided tour takes you from Lisbon to Évora, Beja, Silves, Alvor, Ponta da Piedade, Sagres, Cabo de S. Vicente, Lagos, Setúbal, Serra da Arrábida and back to Lisbon.

The town of Évora is a mosaic of culture, history and traditions where you can visit the Roman Temple, the Romanesque-gothic Cathedral, Saint Francis Church with the Bones Chapel, and the University. You stay overnight in the city, so there’s plenty of time to explore there before moving on the next day to Beja, were the highest tower of Portuguese medieval castles dominates the town and the region.

You then enjoy a scenic drive from the Alentejo region to the Algarve, arriving at Silves, the renowned town dominated by its red sandstone castle dating back mainly to Moorish times and by the memory of is former cork industry. You then pass by the golden sands of places like Praia da Rocha (beach of rocks) to Alvor.

You will also visit the fishing port of Sagres, to the fortress that is the mythical “navigation school” linked with Prince Henry the Navigator; drive up on to the cliffs of Cabo São Vincente, the most southwestern point in Europe; and visit the cosmopolitan town of Lagos, where you can try some delicious sea food, and probably will bump into any number of expat Brits.
